Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins are expressing widespread anger and disappointment following the recent dismissal of a well-regarded rinkside reporter. The timing of the layoff, occurring just one month after her wedding, has amplified the backlash.
Reporter’s Departure Sparks Fan Fury
Hailey Hunter, who spent three seasons covering the Penguins for SportsNet Pittsburgh, shared the news of her departure. While expressing gratitude for her time with the team, she indicated a lack of clarity regarding the specific reasons for her termination. Hunter was quoted as stating, “Unfortunately, I was told the Penguins have decided that they simply wanted to move in a different direction with the role.” She further added, “I really wasn’t given any details, but I understand that’s the business we are in.”
The unexpected nature of her dismissal has particularly resonated with fans, especially given that Hunter recently married her partner of five years, Gage Posey, in May.
Hunter’s Background and Network Relationships
Hunter boasts a significant background in sports. Prior to her broadcasting career, she pursued a path on the LPGA Tour. Her connection to the Penguins runs deep, as her father, Tim, played for the team for 55 games between 1982 and 1984.
Reflecting on her time at SportsNet Pittsburgh, Hunter described the experience as feeling like family. “The network truly felt like family and everyone there will always be great friends of mine,” she said. “I’ll be having a get-together with many of the people I worked with next week, from cameramen to producers to executives from our network. We are all pretty shocked, but everyone’s kindness and support has truly meant the world to me.”
Fan Reactions and Official Statement
Online reactions from fans have been overwhelmingly supportive of Hunter. Many expressed their admiration for her reporting, with one user on X commenting, “Sorry to hear that. I really liked her. I thought she was very good and very knowledgeable of the sport.” Another fan questioned the decision, stating, “She was outstanding. What could the possible reason be?” A third commenter lamented, “Very sad that the Penguins have chosen to ‘go in a different direction.’ She did a great job!”
A spokesperson for SportsNet Pittsburgh acknowledged Hunter’s contributions. “We are grateful for all of Hailey’s contributions during her time at SportsNet Pittsburgh. We wish her the very best in her future endeavors,” the spokesperson stated. “We will soon begin a nationwide search for a rinkside reporter for our Penguins coverage.”
The Penguins concluded the 2023-2024 NHL season by making the playoffs for the first time in three years, ultimately losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.
