Tragedy Unfolds: 11-Year-Old Raped and Murdered Amidst Ignored Allegations

A horrific case has sent shockwaves across France following the confirmation that an 11-year-old schoolgirl, Lyhanna, was raped before she was murdered. Autopsy results revealed the biological profile of Jérôme Barella, 41, on intimate areas of the young victim, according to reports BFMTV. This grim update has understandably left Lyhanna’s family grappling with profound disgust and anger.

The family’s legal representative issued a statement expressing their anguish: “Faced with the worst that could happen to a child and her parents, their anger is matched only by their disgust. The family requests that their privacy and personal life be respected.”

Discovery and Investigation

Lyhanna was discovered on June 4th in a disused grain silo on abandoned farmland in Fleurance. Her disappearance had been reported six days prior. An extensive search effort involving approximately 170 officers, supported by volunteers and personnel on horseback, scoured the countryside before her body was found. The location of her discovery was an isolated farm, less than ten miles from where she was last seen.

Barella, identified as the father of a friend Lyhanna knew and the last individual seen with her, has been charged with kidnapping and false imprisonment. He is currently being held in solitary confinement at Mont-de-Marsan prison awaiting trial.

Pattern of Allegations and Systemic Failures

Emerging details reveal that Barella had faced multiple accusations of raping minors in recent years. Official records indicate two rape complaints were lodged against him in 2022 and 2025, with the 2022 case being dismissed. Crucially, in August of the previous year, the mother of a 10-year-old girl named Rosa reported Barella for alleged sexual abuse of her daughter on several occasions. Medical evidence reportedly confirmed the child had been abused. Despite this complaint being filed nine months prior to the current developments, Barella had not been questioned by investigators.

Two additional cases involving accusations of Barella molesting young girls were reportedly closed due to insufficient evidence.

The perceived inaction by law enforcement has fueled public outcry, with some members of the French populace suggesting that if Barella had been contacted by police, he might have been deterred, potentially preventing Lyhanna’s tragic death.

Official Response and Family History

Under mounting pressure, French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged a significant breakdown in the system. “It is clear there was a malfunction,” he stated. “Things did not happen as they should have. That is obvious, and it is unacceptable. We cannot look her family in the face and tell them everything went well. That is false.”

Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin expressed his shock at the Barella case and questioned the lack of decisive action. Compounding the tragedy, it has been revealed that both Barella’s father and brother have faced prior accusations of rape.

Jérôme Barella’s brother, Yannick, was arrested on charges including “rape of a minor over 15 years old,” “rape by spouse,” “sequestration,” and “repeated death threats by spouse.” Their father, whose first name also begins with J, was accused of rape by his partner’s granddaughters. The first complaint, filed by a 12-year-old in 2018, was later dismissed by police. A second complaint involved a minor, aged between 10 and 13, who also alleged rape, according to reports RTL and Le Parisien.

These allegations against Barella’s father were brought back into focus as part of a broader review of sexual abuse cases involving minors, initiated at the request of Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin.

Lyhanna’s body was discovered at a property where Barella is believed to have worked.
