A new detective series on Channel 5 is generating buzz, particularly among fans of the popular show Death in Paradise. While Death in Paradise immerses viewers in crime-solving on a fictional Caribbean island, the upcoming comedy-drama Benidorm is Murder offers a similar ‘cosy’ mystery experience set against the backdrop of Spain.

A Detective’s Reluctant Return

The series centers on Dennis, a seemingly burned-out detective portrayed by John Hannah. Having left behind the pressures of his life in the UK, Dennis now runs a bar in the vibrant Spanish resort town of Benidorm, seeking a more tranquil existence. However, his peace is shattered when a series of tourist deaths disrupts his newfound calm.

According to the show’s synopsis, Dennis is reluctantly pulled back into his former profession. He finds an unlikely partner in his barmaid, Rosa, an avid fan of crime dramas. Combining Dennis’s practical, real-world investigative experience with Rosa’s extensive knowledge gleaned from television, the duo tackles a new murder mystery in each episode. Their efforts unfold in a picturesque setting while they navigate the complexities of working alongside the local Spanish police force.

First Look at the Cast and Characters

Production company Clapperboard Studios has released initial images offering a glimpse of the characters. John Hannah appears as Dennis, described as a character who is both “grumpy but secretly brilliant.” Carolina Bécquer stars as Rosa, the enthusiastic barmaid. The ensemble cast also includes Ariadna Cabrol as the authoritative DS Maria Hernandez and Damian Schedler Cruz as the eager, new PC Jesús Ballesteros.

The series promises a parade of guest stars as the body count rises. Notable additions to the cast include Denise Welch, Alistair McGowan, and Tamzin Outhwaite. A playful teaser from the production team hints at the show’s appeal, asking: “Name a better happy hour, we’ll wait.”

Cast and Crew Reactions

John Hannah, known for his roles in films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and The Mummy trilogy, ed his enthusiasm for the project. Following the release of the first-look images on Instagram, he commented: “THE BEST TIME!” Tamzin Outhwaite echoed his sentiment, adding, “Had a wonderful time filming this.”

When the series was initially announced, Greg Barnett, commissioning editor at Channel 5, shared his excitement about John Hannah’s involvement. He stated, “I am thrilled to have John Hannah on board. He’s absolutely perfect for the role of Dennis – a character with sharp intellect, dry wit, and life experience – and from what I’ve seen already, viewers will fall in love with him.”

Viviane Richard, associate producer of the series at ZDF Studios, described the show as a “witty and charming addition to the cosy crime genre.”

Benidorm is Murder is slated to premiere on Channel 5.
