Presidential Visit Sparks Outrage Over Canceled Fan Gatherings
New York City is buzzing with anticipation for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, but a cloud of controversy has emerged surrounding President Donald Trump’s planned attendance. The President’s visit to Madison Square Garden on Monday, where the Knicks will face the San Antonio Spurs, has led to the cancellation of popular outdoor watch parties, drawing sharp criticism from elected officials and fans alike.
Congresswoman Criticizes Security Measures Impacting Fans
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the representative for New York’s 14th congressional district, has voiced strong disapproval of the security protocols enacted for the President’s visit. In a public statement and on social media, Ocasio-Cortez asserted that Trump’s presence is directly responsible for the shutdown of fan watch parties outside the arena, which had been a significant source of enjoyment for thousands during earlier games.
Responding to questions about the impact on the game day atmosphere, Ocasio-Cortez stated, “It already has been! Now the city has to shut down all the watch parties outside of the arena, that have been the source of so much fun.” She added, “All of that is going to get shut down tomorrow because Trump wants to show up.”
The Congresswoman further elaborated on her perspective as a public figure, explaining that she has sometimes opted out of attending events to ensure that the public can fully enjoy the experience. “Sometimes the accommodations that are required – [such as] the security for you to show up – are just not worth shutting down the fun for other people,” she commented. “Sometimes you decide not to go to things so that other people can enjoy it.”
Conflicting Statements Emerge Over Watch Party Decision
The decision to cancel the outdoor watch parties became a point of contention, with initial reports suggesting a disagreement between the NYPD and Madison Square Garden officials. While an NYPD spokesperson initially indicated that watch parties could proceed, a subsequent statement from the department reversed this position.
A definitive statement from the NYPD confirmed, “There will be no watch party outside MSG. This decision was made in coordination with the Secret Service.” The department indicated that alternative watch party locations were being explored.
However, Madison Square Garden issued its own statement, suggesting that the cancellation of a specific permit for the Plaza33 watch party was handled by the City’s permitting office in consultation with the NYPD and was not directly linked to the President’s attendance. The statement also noted anticipated additional street closures around the venue.
The NYPD reiterated its stance, clarifying that the absence of watch parties outside Madison Square Garden for Game 3 was “fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit.” The department anticipates that watch parties will resume for Game 4.
Extensive Security Measures Planned for Game 3
The influx of security personnel, including hundreds of U.S. Secret Service officers and agents alongside thousands of NYPD personnel, is set to create a significant security perimeter around Madison Square Garden. This will involve extensive street closures in the surrounding Midtown Manhattan area.
Access for vehicles and pedestrians will be restricted within the secured zone, impacting daily commutes and activities in one of the city’s most bustling districts. Only ticketed attendees will be permitted near the arena, and they will be subject to rigorous security screenings. Notably, attendees will be prohibited from bringing any bags, including purses and backpacks, into the venue.
Security checkpoints are scheduled to open at 6:30 p.m., two hours before the 8:30 p.m. tip-off, with attendees advised to arrive early to navigate what are expected to be lengthy queues.
