Arsonists targeted a Jewish-owned business in northwest London’s Hendon area late last night, prompting a swift police response. Authorities received reports at 10:31 p.m. of an individual approaching a row of shops with a plastic bag containing three bottles filled with fluid.
Details of the Attack
The suspect placed the bag against the building and set the contents alight before fleeing. The bottles did not fully ignite, resulting in only minor damage to the shopfront and no injuries. Counter Terrorism Policing London leads the investigation, with support from North West Command Area officers. Officials maintain an open mind on the motive and do not classify it as a terrorist incident at this stage.
Islamist Group’s Claim
An Iran-backed Islamist organization, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, has claimed responsibility. The group posted a video on Telegram showing someone igniting bottles inside the business and capturing flames as they escaped. This follows their claim yesterday of launching two drones loaded with “radioactive and dangerous carcinogenic material” toward the nearby Israeli Embassy. The video depicted individuals in hazmat-style suits preparing the drones.
The same group now asserts involvement in six attacks since early April, signaling a sharp rise in activity.
Police Response and Security Measures
Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London stated: “At this stage, last night’s arson is not linked to other recent incidents in northwest London or last month’s arson in Golders Green. However, counter terrorism officers lead due to attack similarities. Anyone with information or footage should contact police immediately. We remain relentless in pursuing those behind these hateful acts against London’s communities.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who oversees local policing, added: “Since the Golders Green incident last month, we have engaged extensively with community leaders. This latest event heightens concerns. Local officers collaborate closely with counter terrorism teams. Expect increased patrols, including armed units and Project Servator deployments trained to detect potential threats.”
Yesterday’s drone claim led to Kensington Gardens closure in central London. Forensic teams in protective hazmat suits and gas masks examined discarded items. Security experts view the footage as amateurish but treat threats seriously, suspecting possible ties to pro-Iranian proxies.
