Commander Reid Wiseman Captures Lunar Surface in Stunning Detail
During the Artemis II spacecraft’s final approach to its historic lunar flyby, Commander Reid Wiseman showcased a remarkable photo of the moon’s surface taken with his iPhone 17 Pro Max. The image highlights the spacecraft’s close encounter, slingshotting it back toward Earth.
Crew Shares iPhone Images from Space
The Artemis II team has posted numerous photos captured on their iPhones in recent days. This marks the first time NASA astronauts flew with the latest smartphones, according to NASA administrator Jared Isaacman.
Besides four iPhone 17 Pro Max units, the crew employed a GoPro HERO 4 Black, Nikon D5, and Nikon Z 9 to document the mission. All images appear on NASA Johnson’s Flickr account.
Livestream Reveals 8x Zoom Shot of Chebyshev Crater
As the Orion capsule neared the moon, astronauts photographed the view through the window after dimming cabin lights for optimal clarity. NASA Public Affairs Officer and Live Mission Commentator Leah Mustachio described the process during the livestream.
Wiseman approached the camera to display the vivid lunar image on his iPhone. He confirmed capturing it with 8x zoom, and Mission Control identified the Chebyshev crater in the shot.
Post-Flyby Activities Underway
The crew currently conducts post-lunar flyby tasks, including transmitting images to Earth, as Mustachio reported. Full-resolution versions of these photos, potentially including Wiseman’s, will soon update on NASA’s Flickr.
