Search for Missing Boater Enters Third Day Near Cherry Beach
The intensive search for a man believed to have drowned in Lake Ontario after his inflatable vessel capsized near Cherry Beach has now extended into its third day. Emergency services were dispatched to the city’s east end around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday following reports of an inflatable boat with two occupants that began to lose air and sink.
According to officials, one of the men from the boat, along with a dog, was successfully rescued by a passing civilian vessel. This individual was subsequently transferred to the custody of police and paramedics. The rescued man, reportedly in his 40s, sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. However, the second man remains unaccounted for.
Shift to Recovery Operation Amid Ongoing Search
The search efforts were temporarily suspended overnight on Wednesday due to darkness. The focus has since transitioned to a recovery operation, suggesting authorities now believe the missing individual has perished. “We realize this is a tragic event and our thoughts are with those impacted,” a spokesperson stated.
Throughout Thursday, the marine unit conducted an extensive search of the lake, employing divers, boats, sonar equipment, and an underwater drone. These operations were again halted with the onset of night.
Public Urged to Exercise Caution on Waterways
As of Friday morning, Toronto police confirmed that the search, now in its third day, was set to recommence. “Recovery efforts will resume this morning, but I cannot confirm what time the search will begin,” authorities indicated early this morning. They also issued a public advisory, urging individuals to exercise caution when on the water and to report any suspicious activity to the police.
