Seattle Seahawks legend Bobby Wagner, a 35-year-old NFL veteran, humorously declares his new title following an honorary doctoral degree from his alma mater, Utah State University.
Commencement Spotlight
Wagner served as the keynote speaker at Utah State’s 139th commencement ceremony last week, addressing over 6,000 graduates. The university honored him with a Doctorate of Humane Letters for his outstanding professional achievements and dedication to community service. As a USU Athletics Hall of Famer and NFL All-Pro linebacker, Wagner celebrated the milestone with family present.
“If you didn’t know, my name is now Dr. Bobby Wagner,” he announced. Turning to relatives, he added, “You need to update my name in your phone. It’s ‘Dr.’ now. I will no longer respond to ‘Bobby.’ It’s Dr. only.”
Personal Reflections in Speech
Currently a free agent after playing the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders, Wagner shared how he chose Utah State. He recounted a visit with his late mother, who secured his scholarship. “She told me I either accept the scholarship, or I wasn’t coming back home,” he said. With no ride-sharing options, NIL deals, or payments available then, he accepted.
Wagner reflected, “One of the things that taught me was the place you least expect to be is the place you’re exactly supposed to be.”
Utah State Legacy
From 2008 to 2011, Wagner started 46 of 48 games for the Aggies, amassing 446 tackles—a school record. He led the team to its first bowl appearance in 14 years during his senior season. The university inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame and retired his No. 9 jersey in April, marking only the third such honor in program history.
NFL Career Highlights
Drafted by the Seahawks in the second round of 2012, Wagner played there from 2012 to 2021 and in 2023. He appeared in back-to-back Super Bowls, securing a victory in 2014. His accolades include multiple All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections with both the Seahawks and Commanders.
On February 5, 2026, Wagner earned the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, celebrating excellence on and off the field.
