WNBA Star Breanna Stewart Prioritizes Team Success Over Max Contract
New York’s celebrated basketball icon, Breanna Stewart, recently revealed her strategic decision to re-sign with the New York Liberty for a reported three years and $3.7 million, a move that prioritized team stability over a potentially larger individual payday. This decision allows the Liberty to retain its core championship contenders, including Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones, for the upcoming seasons.
Stewart, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and a key figure in the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) executive committee, played an instrumental role in negotiating the league’s new collective-bargaining agreement. This agreement significantly increased top salaries from $249,000 to $1.4 million. While Stewart benefited from this raise, she opted for a contract with the Liberty that, while substantial, was not the absolute maximum available on the free-agent market.
New York’s Opportunities Drive Decision
Stewart highlighted the unique opportunities available in New York as a major factor in her commitment to the Liberty. “I think that the opportunities in New York are kind of limitless,” Stewart stated. This sentiment was echoed in her recent experience participating in the SailGP international racing league, where she was a celebrity guest, experiencing the thrill of high-speed catamaran sailing.
She took part in the “Sixth Sailor Experience,” involving training with the crew and even piloting a $5 million sailboat reaching speeds of approximately 50 mph. This exposure to high-profile events, funded by figures like Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, underscores the vibrant and diverse opportunities New York offers, extending beyond traditional sports.
Balancing Personal Earnings with Team Building
Stewart acknowledged the dual goal of maximizing her earnings while ensuring the Liberty has the financial flexibility to attract and retain top talent. “I think, wanting to obviously make as much as I can, while also making sure that [the Liberty] have the [cap] space to have a lot of great players is something that’s really important, and definitely wanted to make sure of that,” she explained.
This isn’t the first time Stewart has made financial considerations for the benefit of the team. Previously, she signed a one-year extension that provided the Liberty with additional cap room, a move that appears even more strategic now with the league’s salary cap significantly increased.
Leveraging Player Value and League Growth
Stewart’s career has been marked by a consistent drive for player empowerment. Her international playing experience in China, Russia, and Turkey, along with her leadership in the WNBPA, has provided valuable leverage in labor negotiations. She noted that the current landscape allows players to make informed decisions about their careers, whether choosing to play overseas, participate in emerging leagues like Unrivaled, or focus on domestic opportunities.
“Now that the WNBA really sees the worth and the value of the players, it’ll be a decision,” Stewart said. “It’s not something you’re forced to do, but you can decide if you want to play in the off season, or you want to go to Unrivaled, go overseas and things like that.”
The improved labor deal in the WNBA, which has secured an 11-year media rights deal worth at least $281 million annually, signifies a major step forward in player valuation, drawing comparisons to advancements in other professional sports leagues.
Looking Ahead: On-Court and Off-Court Challenges
With labor peace secured, Stewart’s focus shifts to the on-court performance of the Liberty, who are currently navigating a competitive summer sports calendar. The league’s expanded media presence, including deals with NBC, USA, Peacock, and Amazon Prime Video, presents greater opportunities for viewership and revenue growth, which in turn can further enhance player compensation.
Stewart, accustomed to high-pressure environments since her collegiate days at UConn, embraces the challenge of competing for attention in a crowded sports market. Her leadership and strategic decision-making continue to shape not only her own career but also the trajectory of the WNBA as a whole.
