A Channel 5 documentary marking the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster carries a trigger warning for ‘easily imitable dangerous behaviour,’ prompting criticism as ‘mad’ and ‘crazy.’

Inside Chernobyl with Ben Fogle

Host Ben Fogle spends a week alone in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone for the 90-minute program. Viewers gain privileged access to Control Room 4, where the catastrophe originated. The film airs next week on Channel 5.

The 1986 Chernobyl Disaster

On April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat exploded during a safety test. A sudden heat surge ruptured fuel channels, triggering a steam explosion that destroyed the reactor core. A secondary blast followed seconds later.

Engineers tested blackout scenarios unaware of the reactor’s instability. The incident killed 30 plant operators and firefighters immediately.

Authorities evacuated Pripyat’s 50,000 residents and thousands more beyond the 30km exclusion zone. The event released the largest uncontrolled radioactive material in civilian history, impacting over 3.5 million people and contaminating 50,000 square kilometers across Europe, including parts of Britain.

Investigations pinpointed design flaws and inadequate training. The blast dislodged the 1,000-tonne reactor lid, equivalent to three Boeing 747s. Around 5,000 children and adolescents later developed thyroid cancer.

Reactions to the Trigger Warning

One viewer called the warning ‘mad,’ adding, ‘I thought it was crazy putting that trigger warning as all tourism is banned there due to the fighting in Ukraine.’

This follows a trigger warning for a stage adaptation of John le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, citing ‘strong and derogatory language prevalent in the period, including antisemitism, and depictions of violence including torture and gunshots.’
