A Bitcoin holder has regained access to nearly $400,000 worth of cryptocurrency thanks to Anthropic’s Claude AI, which uncovered a forgotten wallet backup file buried among old computer data.
The Decade-Old Lockout
For over a decade, 5 Bitcoin remained inaccessible in a wallet on an old college computer. The owner had purchased the coins when Bitcoin traded at around $250 each but later changed the wallet password during a hazy moment and forgot it entirely.
Countless recovery efforts followed, including attempts to brute-force trillions of password combinations, all without success. Recently, the owner rediscovered an old mnemonic phrase and, in a last-ditch effort, uploaded files from the ancient computer to Claude AI.
AI Spots the Key File
Claude did not crack any encryption. Instead, it efficiently sifted through years of disorganized files and identified a wallet backup from before the password change. Combining this backup with the mnemonic phrase allowed the owner to restore full access to the funds.
With Bitcoin’s current value, the recovered wallet now holds nearly $400,000.
AI’s Role in Digital Archaeology
This recovery highlights how AI tools excel at navigating vast, scattered digital archives—think old hard drives, USB sticks, and forgotten cloud accounts. Users often overlook valuable data amid the clutter, but AI processes it tirelessly without fatigue.
Such capabilities position conversational AI as practical assistants for real-world challenges, like untangling messy personal data histories.
The owner celebrated the breakthrough on social media and jokingly announced plans to name a future child after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
