Claude Users Must Pay Extra for OpenClaw After April 4 Update

Anthropic has eliminated access to third-party tools like OpenClaw from standard Claude subscriptions effective April 4, 2026. Users now require separate pay-as-you-go billing, prepaid usage bundles, or API fees to connect with OpenClaw and similar services.

Key Changes and Transition Support

In an email to customers, Anthropic announced: “Starting April 4, you’ll no longer be able to use your Claude subscription limits for third-party harnesses including OpenClaw.” To ease the shift, the company provides a one-time credit matching the monthly subscription price, redeemable until April 17. Discounts of up to 30% on bundles are also available.

Users may request refunds for subscriptions impacted by these updated terms.

Reasons for the Policy Shift

Claude subscriptions target human chat interactions, not intensive autonomous agent workflows. Tools like OpenClaw demand far more compute power than typical usage, straining systems. Anthropic explains: “We’ve been working to manage demand across the board, but these tools put an outsized strain on our systems.”

Criticism from OpenClaw Creators

Peter Steinberger, OpenClaw creator, accuses Anthropic of replicating popular features in a closed system before restricting open-source options. “Both me and Dave Morin tried to talk sense into Anthropic; the best we managed was delaying this for a week,” he states.
