Developer Hyperventilates in Court During Fatal Boat Crash Trial

A Florida real estate developer, George Pino, 54, experienced a second day of intense emotional distress in court on Tuesday, hyperventilating and requiring comfort from his attorney. This follows an emotional breakdown on Monday that halted the proceedings of his trial. Pino is facing charges of manslaughter and felony vessel homicide in connection with a 2022 boat crash that resulted in the death of 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez.

Trial Paused by Emotional Outburst

The trial, which began on Monday, was temporarily suspended when Pino, a millionaire developer, became overwhelmed with tears and wept before the courtroom. The jury was dismissed for the remainder of the day due to the outburst. Footage of the defendant’s visible distress circulated widely on social media.

On Tuesday, Pino again struggled to maintain composure as the trial continued. His attorney, Howard Srebnick, was observed placing an arm around his client to offer support. This second emotional episode occurred as Lucy Fernandez’s father, Andres Fernandez, took the stand. He recounted knowing Pino for years and that their daughters had grown up together.

Father’s Heartbreaking Testimony

Attendees in the courtroom were visibly moved to tears during Andres Fernandez’s testimony. He described rushing to the scene of the crash and searching for hours before discovering his daughter’s body in the water.

Prosecution and Defense Arguments

Monday’s proceedings were halted shortly after prosecutor Laura Adams concluded her opening statements and as Pino’s defense attorney began presenting his arguments. Adams observed Pino beginning to sob and shake, prompting her to request a delay, deeming his breakdown inappropriate for the jury to witness. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez concurred, instructing Pino’s attorney to ensure his client could control himself, stating it was not proper for the jury to witness such emotional behavior.

Pino stepped out to compose himself, but his lead attorney, Howard Srebnick, expressed concern for his client’s health to the judge. Following a brief recess, Miami Fire Rescue assessed Pino. The judge ultimately agreed to dismiss the jury for the day, with opening statements scheduled to resume on Tuesday morning.

Details of the Fatal Crash

The fatal crash claimed the life of 17-year-old Luciana ‘Lucy’ Fernandez. Katerina Puig, then 18, sustained debilitating and permanent injuries that will impact her ability to live independently.

Reports indicate Pino was operating a 29-foot Robalo vessel at approximately 50 miles per hour when it struck a channel marker near Boca Chita Key on September 4, 2022. Pino and his wife, Cecilia Pino, were hosting several teenage girls for their daughter’s 18th birthday party at the time. All the girls on board were lifelong friends of Carolina Pino and students at Carrolton School of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Lourdes Academy.

Investigation revealed that Pino was piloting the boat back to the dock when the collision occurred. Pino reportedly stated that another boat created a large wake, and while checking on the passengers, he hit the marker. The impact ejected everyone from the boat and caused a significant hole in its side, injuring 11 passengers. Six were hospitalized, and Fernandez later died from her injuries.
