Former Disney Performers Detail Disturbing Encounters and Strict Rules

The enchantment of Disney theme parks is meticulously crafted for guests, but for those embodying the beloved characters, the reality can be far from magical. Former performers have come forward to share unsettling experiences, including inappropriate guest interactions and stringent, often dehumanizing, employment conditions.

Allegations of Harassment and Lack of Support

Alyssa Klinzing, who portrayed Princess Elsa at Disneyland, recounted a harrowing incident where a guest allegedly whispered vulgarities in her ear and attempted to grope her. Despite the guest pressing his lips against her skin and reaching under her costume, Klinzing felt compelled to remain in character due to Disney’s strict policies. She described the moment as feeling like slow motion, paralyzed by fear and uncertainty.

Klinzing reported the incident to management and filed an official report, but claims she received little support. She was reportedly informed that the guest had intellectual disabilities and would be permitted to continue visiting the park with a chaperone. Klinzing stated that she encountered the same guest multiple times afterward, and despite repeatedly filing incident reports, she felt Disney management took no effective action.

She observed that while property damage by guests would result in immediate bans, similar consequences were not applied to individuals exhibiting inappropriate behavior towards performers. Klinzing also indicated that performers receive minimal training beyond being told to “try to pull the attention to something else and divert the best you can.”

Chilling Accounts from Other Performers

Hunter Haag, who worked as a character performer at Disney World from 2016 to 2021, shared a similarly disturbing encounter. She described a father making a lewd tongue gesture at her while his family watched. Like Klinzing, Haag felt pressure to maintain character integrity, fearing job loss if she reacted otherwise.

Haag also detailed experiences with children pulling on her wig and sticking hands into her costume. She recalled one instance where a member of a bachelorette party made an inappropriate comment about a male character’s anatomy.

Intense Competition and Strict Appearance Standards

Beyond guest interactions, performers face intense competition for roles. Klinzing described the environment as “dog-eat-dog” and likened it to a “high school drama department,” where information is hoarded and sabotage can occur. Haag recounted an instance where a performer allegedly sent unflattering photos of rivals to sabotage their auditions.

The pressure extends to maintaining a specific physical appearance. Haag stated that performers were regularly evaluated every eight months to ensure they still fit the character’s “silhouette” and appeared “young enough.” Deviations in weight or appearance could lead to removal from a role. Additionally, performers faced stringent aesthetic rules, including prohibitions on tan lines, specific nail polish colors, false lashes, and unauthorized makeup.

The Emotional Toll of Maintaining Character

Klinzing expressed that the emphasis on a narrow, youthful aesthetic contributed to her decision to leave Disney. She noted that performers are often tasked with embodying characters who are permanently 16 to 21 years old, creating a disconnect as the performers age. Klinzing believes this pressure has led to post-traumatic stress disorder related to aging.

“Smile lines, wrinkles, sunspots – these are things that show that you’ve lived a really long and beautiful life… but they’re not things that a Disney princess are going to portray,” Klinzing stated, emphasizing her decision to leave when she felt it was her time.

Enduring Allure of Disney Performance

Despite these challenges, the allure of being a Disney performer remains powerful. Klinzing acknowledges that the prestige and the dream of embodying a princess are strong enough for many to overlook the demanding conditions and potential negative experiences. “There’s people who want it so bad that they don’t really care what the pay is, they don’t really care what the treatment is,” she said.

Official statements from Disney regarding these allegations have not been provided. However, records indicate that some incidents have led to police involvement, including arrests and lifetime bans from parks for severe misconduct by guests.
