Homemade Bread: Tastier, Healthier, and More Economical

Baking bread from scratch may seem daunting, but creating delicious loaves at home has never been simpler. A popular food content creator is urging home cooks to reconsider purchasing bread from supermarkets, asserting that homemade versions offer superior flavor, are more budget-friendly, and contribute to better health.

The Drawbacks of Supermarket Bread

Jerome, known online as Jerome Cooks Food, recently shared a straightforward four-ingredient recipe for crafting perfect ciabatta rolls. In a recently released video, Jerome detailed his concerns about commercial bread production. He stated, “Supermarket bread is usually full of non-nutritional ingredients, with things like emulsifiers, preservatives, dough conditioners, just to name a few. These add nothing to the taste but can potentially damage your gut.”

The Simple Path to Delicious Bread

He continued, “But it doesn’t have to be this way. All you need to make bread is flour, water, salt, yeast, and a little bit of time. It’s tastier than anything you’ll buy. And it’s healthier and cheaper as well.” Jerome highlighted that his no-knead ciabatta recipe requires minimal active preparation time, emphasizing the unparalleled satisfaction of enjoying fresh, crispy bread straight from the oven.

Essential Ingredients for Every Kitchen

The ingredients required for this recipe are staples typically found in any home kitchen, making them accessible for both novice and experienced bakers. The dough is prepared by combining flour, yeast, salt, and water in a bowl, forming a wet, shaggy mixture. Patience is key during the proving stage, during which time home cooks can attend to other daily tasks.

Jerome’s Ciabatta Recipe: A Step-by-Step Guide

The dough requires approximately one hour and 20 minutes for proving, with three folding stages. To achieve a desirable crispy crust, a bowl filled with water is placed in the oven to create steam during baking.

Jerome’s video, which has garnered significant attention online, included the following recipe:

Ciabatta (makes 6-8 rolls)

Ingredients:
  • 400ml lukewarm water
  • 2 tsp (7g) Fast action/instant yeast
  • 450g Strong White Bread Flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp (8g) salt
Method:
  1. Combine the lukewarm water, yeast, and salt in a bowl and mix.
  2. Add the flour and stir until a shaggy dough forms with no dry flour remaining.
  3. Cover the bowl and let the dough rest for 30 minutes, then perform a stretch and fold.
  4. Repeat the stretch and fold process two more times (for a total of three folds), followed by another 30-minute rest.
  5. Preheat your oven to 220°C (fan).
  6. Carefully turn the dough out onto a well-floured, lined baking sheet.
  7. Gently stretch the dough from the center to an even thickness, then divide it into 6 or 8 rolls.
  8. Cover the rolls and let them rest for 20 minutes.
  9. Five minutes before baking, fill a heatproof dish halfway with boiling water and place it on the lowest shelf of the oven.
  10. Place the ciabatta rolls on the middle shelf and bake for 20-25 minutes. The bread is ready when golden brown and produces a hollow sound when tapped.
  11. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before serving.

The creator’s concise philosophy, “Real food, real fast,” encapsulates the essence of this accessible baking project. The video has resonated with viewers, inspiring others to experiment with homemade bread, including variations like flatbreads and even air fryer bread.
