A surprise guest at the Texas Republican convention in Houston on Friday took an unexpected turn when a nine-foot-tall African elephant, named Paige, urinated on the convention floor. The incident occurred shortly after Governor Greg Abbott concluded his keynote address before a large gathering of party faithful.
Paige was paraded through the packed convention hall as a planned attraction. However, the spectacle shifted dramatically when the elephant stopped and relieved itself in an aisle, visible to delegates, reporters, and activists. The event, held at the George R. Brown Convention Center, was captured on video and quickly circulated across social media platforms.
Footage of the moment shows the elephant widening its stance as a stream of urine poured onto the floor, all while the country song “Only in America” played. One startled attendee’s exclamation of “Oh, shoot!” was audible in shared videos.
A ‘Larger-Than-Life Surprise’
Organizers had teased attendees about a special guest prior to Paige’s entrance. A message displayed on convention screens alerted delegates to an upcoming “larger-than-life surprise,” advising them to stay aware of their surroundings and keep aisles clear.
The message read, “A Texas-Sized Heads-Up: Attention Please – Today’s program includes a larger-than-life surprise. Please stay aware of your surroundings, keep aisles clear, and follow directions from event staff. Y’all are in for a memorable afternoon.” A cartoon elephant wearing a cowboy hat accompanied the announcement.
Paige entered the hall adorned with a red, white, and blue feathered headpiece and a banner displaying Governor Abbott’s slogan, “Unity Drives Victory.” The elephant’s appearance was intended to highlight a recognizable symbol of the Republican Party.
Reactions and Elephant Background
The Texas Democratic Party quickly responded to the incident, sharing video footage online and offering a pointed commentary. “Governor Abbott closed out his speech at the Texas GOP convention with a live elephant. It then peed on the floor as it left the room. The perfect metaphor for the Texas Republican Party,” the party posted on X.
In contrast, the Texas GOP shared video of Paige’s arrival on social media, expressing enthusiasm. “Welcome Paige! Thanks for stopping by the State Convention! What a treat for our delegates and guests – it’s one they won’t ever forget!” the party stated.
Information from East Texas Elephant Experience in Cut and Shoot, Texas, indicates that Paige is a significant animal. She was brought to the United States as an orphan in the mid-1980s and is described as the largest of the facility’s three elephants, standing approximately nine feet tall and weighing close to 9,000 pounds.
