England’s World Cup Preparations Hit by Major Equipment Theft
A significant portion of the England national football team’s equipment, valued at approximately £13,500, was stolen during transit from their pre-World Cup training base in Miami to Kansas City. The missing items include personal gear, team apparel, and unique collectibles, casting a shadow over the team’s preparations for the upcoming tournament.
Details of the Heist Emerge
The theft is believed to have occurred while the cargo was being transported by a haulage company. Reports indicate the incident took place at the Swope Soccer Village, the team’s designated hub for the duration of the World Cup. While the majority of the stolen goods have since been recovered, the precise circumstances of the raid are now coming to light.
An official reports the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office, detailing the events that unfolded after authorities were called to the Kansas City base around 5 p.m. on Friday, has shed light on the extent of the loss. Among the items recovered, which collectively amount to £13,500, were:
- Four pairs of cleats, each valued at £250 (approximately $1,340.60 USD).
- Five pairs of shoes, each valued at £170 (approximately $1,139.50 USD).
- One red jersey, signed by the national team, with an estimated value of $5,000 USD.
- Two white jerseys, each signed by the national team, valued at $5,000 USD apiece.
- A World Cup soccer ball, valued at £160 (approximately $214.50 USD).
- A pair of goalkeeper gloves, valued at £120 (approximately $160.87 USD).
- Several team apparel items, including shorts and shirts in navy and light blue, for which no specific value was provided.
- Two lion stuffed animals, with no assigned value.
- Multifunctional power strips, valued at $40.00 USD.
- A JBL speaker, valued at $149.95 USD.
- A Lego set featuring a Nike Air shoe, valued at $99.99 USD.
Items Left Behind
Fortunately, not all of the team’s possessions were taken. The England mascot, Leo the Lion, was among the items left behind. The thieves also apparently deemed a table tennis table too cumbersome to steal. A single £130 Trionda World Cup football was also reportedly left at the scene.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Following the recovery of the stolen goods, two individuals, Mustafa Salik and Erfan Kamal, have been charged. They face one count of receiving stolen property, with potential penalties of up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Team Returns to Training Amidst Further Drama
Despite the disruption, the England team was able to resume training at their Kansas City base, with approximately 300 fans in attendance. However, the team’s camp, along with the wider local area, experienced further disruption when an emergency alert was issued due to a severe tornado warning, forcing everyone to take shelter.
