Newcastle Gears Up for Annual Funfair Extravaganza

Newcastle is buzzing with anticipation as The Hoppings, Europe’s largest travelling funfair, prepares for its annual nine-day run. This iconic event, a staple in the city for over 140 years, is set to transform the vast expanse of Town Moor into a vibrant hub of entertainment, drawing an estimated 300,000 visitors.

Spanning over half a mile on the 1,000-acre Town Moor, larger than London’s Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath combined, this year’s iteration promises an even grander experience. Attendees can look forward to an impressive array of 400 attractions, a sprawling Wild West-themed culinary village, live music performances, and the debut of ‘Elevate 85,’ an 85-meter-tall giant swing tower ride claimed to be the world’s highest travelling ride.

Adding to the excitement, entry to the funfair remains completely free of charge.

Overcoming Site Challenges for a Grand Return

The return of The Hoppings, which traces its origins back to 1882, faced potential uncertainty this year due to essential drainage and groundwork requirements on a section of the Town Moor. However, event organizers have confirmed that a successful reconfiguration of the fair’s layout has been achieved, ensuring that all beloved attractions will be present and accounted for.

Event Details and Opening Hours

The Hoppings is scheduled to commence its 2026 summer season on Friday, June 19, and will run for nine days, concluding on Sunday, June 28. The fairground will be open to the public from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM on weekdays and from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM on weekends.

A Thrill for Every Visitor

With a vast selection of rides, attractions, and games, boredom is unlikely to be a factor at The Hoppings. Classic fairground favorites like the Carousel, Giant Wheel, and Tea Cups will be present, alongside high-octane rollercoasters and spinning rides designed to test the most daring visitors. For younger guests and those seeking a gentler experience, attractions such as the Big Apple and Magic Mouse offer a more relaxed pace.

The undisputed highlight is Elevate 85, an attraction described as a ‘serious adrenaline rush.’ This towering ride lifts passengers 85 meters into the air, offering spectacular panoramic views of Newcastle before initiating a dizzying spin. Having previously thrilled audiences across Europe, Elevate 85 makes its debut at The Hoppings following a successful run at Darlington Arena.

Culinary Delights and Sweet Treats

Complementing the rides is Feast Street USA, the fair’s popular food village, which has undergone a significant transformation. The expanded offering now brings Southern American classics to the North East, with featured dishes including Hot Honey Pizza, Loaded Fries, American BBQ, and Fried Chicken. Sweet treat vendors will also be on hand to satisfy any cravings.

Ride Costs and Discounts

While admission to The Hoppings is free, specific pricing for individual rides for the 2026 event has not yet been officially released. However, it is anticipated that rides will range from £2 to £6, with premium thrill rides likely falling at the higher end of this spectrum. Discount vouchers, offering up to £8 off a visitor’s total spend, are expected to be available for download from the organizer’s official website.

The Hoppings is conveniently located in Newcastle city centre, spanning the Town Moor between Grandstand Road, Claremont Road, Great North Road (A167), and Jesmond Dene Road, making it easily accessible from all directions. Notable landmarks in the vicinity include the Blue House Roundabout, Exhibition Park, Haymarket, Newcastle University, and the popular suburbs of Jesmond and Gosforth.

Alternative Entertainment Options

For those unable to travel to Newcastle, Roof East in London offers a comparable day out. Situated on the rooftop of a multi-storey car park in Stratford, this vibrant urban playground features games, an open-air cinema, diverse street food vendors, free DJ sets, and ample seating, all with free entry.
