Aviation enthusiasts at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk spotted rare F-22 Raptor stealth fighters weeks before the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran, viewing the arrivals as a clear indicator of escalating tensions.

Rare Sightings Spark Speculation

Ian Bowskill, a 73-year-old regular at the base from Bedfordshire, captured the excitement of witnessing four F-22 Raptors fly overhead. He likened the moment to “hitting the jackpot,” stating, “We don’t know if they will go to the Middle East, or whether they’re here just in case, but to see four taking off today is what we’ve all been hoping for.”

Bowskill added that the base serves as “the staging post for U.S. forces to deploy to the Middle East,” emphasizing the UK’s role as “the biggest aircraft carrier off Europe.” He expressed support for U.S. use of the facility but criticized the decision to initiate the conflict, calling it “daft.”

F-22 Raptors: Symbols of High Alert

These advanced stealth fighters rank among the world’s most sophisticated aircraft and appear rarely in the UK, signaling a U.S. shift to war footing. Hundreds of spotters have converged on a designated viewing area near the runway, peering through a 10-foot fence topped with barbed wire.

Dedicated observers arrive equipped with tracking gear, radios, tree-climbing ladders, and even vans, while families and retirees watch from their vehicles.

Spotters Anticipate Escalation

Michael Runham, 46, from East Sussex, travels over two hours regularly to the site. He noted arrivals of U.S. jets in large numbers weeks earlier, sensing the conflict was imminent.

Gemma Aspland, 43, shares live videos of departing jets with thousands on TikTok. She explained that spotters steer clear of political discussions out of respect for pilots and their families: “When we’re live on TikTok, we avoid discussing the conflict or where the planes are heading. We’re mindful of the people flying those jets and the families they’re leaving behind.”

Regional Fallout from Strikes

The U.S.-Israel operations against Iran have stranded hundreds of thousands, triggered mass evacuations, and severely disrupted airports across the Middle East and beyond, with flights still facing major delays despite relief efforts.
