Authorities are issuing a stern warning to football fans regarding a surge in fraudulent websites impersonating official FIFA platforms. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has alerted the public to at least 35 spoofed websites designed to pilfer personal and financial data from unsuspecting supporters preparing for the 2026 World Cup.

Sophisticated Scams Emerge

Cybercriminals are exploiting major global events to conduct their illicit activities, and the FIFA World Cup is no exception. These malicious actors are creating fake websites that closely mimic the legitimate FIFA domain, employing subtle alterations in spelling or domain extensions to deceive users. The aim is to capture sensitive information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and banking details.

“Threat actors often create spoofed websites by slightly altering characteristics of legitimate website domains, with the purpose of gathering personally identifiable information (PII) entered by a user into the site,” the FBI stated. “For example, spoofed website domains may feature alternate spellings of words or use an alternative top-level domain to impersonate a legitimate website. Members of the public could unknowingly visit spoofed websites while attempting to access FIFA’s website.”

Past Incidents and Current Threats

This is not the first time fans have been targeted. Similar ticket scams affected supporters globally years ago, and in 2022, fake World Cup streaming sites emerged. The current wave of sophisticated attacks highlights the ongoing threat to consumers who are eager to engage with major sporting events.

Security Recommendations for Fans

To safeguard against these fraudulent schemes, officials strongly advise fans to take proactive measures:

  • Direct URL Entry: Type the official FIFA website address directly into your browser’s address bar.
  • Avoid Sponsored Search Results: Exercise caution with paid links that appear in search engine results, as these can be intentionally misleading.
  • Verify Domain: Ensure that you are visiting a website with the official ‘.com’ domain extension.
  • Bookmark Trusted Sites: Save the official FIFA website to your bookmarks once you have confirmed its legitimacy.

By following these guidelines, fans can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to these deceptive online practices and enjoy the excitement of the upcoming World Cup safely.
