Forest Green Rovers dismiss reports that a supporter faced removal from the stadium for bringing a bacon sandwich during their 5-0 victory over Morecambe.
The Viral Video Incident
The National League club, known for pioneering a vegan matchday menu since 2015, addressed a circulating video from the weekend. The footage captures stewards escorting a middle-aged man out of The New Lawn stadium. Social media captions labeled him a Morecambe fan ejected for “sneaking in a bacon butty.”
Club’s Official Response
In a statement posted on X, the Gloucestershire-based team clarified the situation. “We are aware of a video circulating online following our game against Morecambe,” the club stated. “Contrary to social media opinion, the ejection stemmed from a little ‘over-exuberance’ on the last day of the season. After repeated warnings, stewards had no choice but to remove the gentleman.”
Manager Robbie Savage Weighs In
Rovers manager Robbie Savage, who guided the team to seventh place and a play-off quarter-final against Boreham Wood, echoed the denial during his appearance on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 show. “I’ve seen that; it’s gone viral. It’s fake news,” Savage asserted. “There was no bacon involved. I can 100 percent categorically confirm there was no bacon sandwich.”
Bigger National League Drama
While the so-called ‘baconbuttygate’ sparked online buzz, the weekend’s true highlight unfolded in the title race. York City secured automatic promotion with a dramatic 103rd-minute equalizer at Rochdale, ending in a 1-1 draw. Rochdale’s Emmanuel Dieseruvwe had scored in the 95th minute, triggering a pitch invasion from home fans. York’s Josh Stones leveled the score after a delay, igniting celebrations from away supporters and leaving Rochdale in second place, two points short.
Rochdale and third-placed Carlisle advance directly to play-off semi-finals. Boreham Wood, Scunthorpe, Southend, and Forest Green enter the quarter-final eliminators.
