Courtroom Confrontation Outside Sentencing
The grandparent of missing four-year-old Gus Lamont was involved in a physical altercation with television reporters following a court appearance. The incident occurred as Josie Murray, 75, was being sentenced for a weapons-related offense.
Weapons Charge and Sentencing
Adelaide Magistrates Court heard that Murray pleaded guilty to acquiring, owning, or possessing a sound moderator, commonly known as a gun silencer. The device was discovered on September 27 last year during an extensive police search for Gus, who had vanished from Murray’s property near Yunta. The court was informed that the silencer had been legally owned for several years, but Murray failed to notify authorities when the law changed in 2017, requiring permission.
Murray was fined $10,500 and received a five-year ban on owning firearms. Her legal representative, Andy Ey, described the period as “extremely difficult” for his client, particularly in light of her grandson’s disappearance.
Reporter Confrontation
Following the sentencing, as Murray exited the courthouse and approached a waiting vehicle, reporters sought comment. They inquired about her satisfaction with the outcome, her hopes for Gus’s safe return, and any statements she wished to make regarding her grandson. Murray declined to answer, attempting to proceed to her car.
During her departure, Murray reportedly elbowed a Channel 7 reporter, Hannah Foord. This action caused Foord to collide with an ABC reporter, Eva Blandis, who subsequently fell to the ground. Murray then entered the backseat of a white utility vehicle and departed the scene, leaving her dropped phone on the vehicle’s running board.
Ongoing Investigation into Gus Lamont’s Disappearance
Gus Lamont was last seen playing outside the Oak Park Station homestead, owned by his maternal grandparents, near Yunta in South Australia, on September 27 of the previous year. The investigation into his disappearance is ongoing and has been described as one of the country’s most complex and closely watched cases.
In May, detectives and specialist police units returned to Oak Park Station. The case has been declared a major crime investigation, and authorities have ruled out abduction by a stranger, identifying a member of Gus’s extended family as a suspect. To date, no arrests have been made or charges laid in connection with Gus’s disappearance.
Parents’ Plea
Gus’s parents, who are separated, issued a joint statement earlier this year expressing the profound impact of their son’s vanishing. They described their lives as shattered and pleaded for anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that even the smallest detail could provide crucial answers.
