Harry Maguire, recently excluded from the national football squad, has been observed engaging with fans in New York City, reportedly as part of a promotional event for football stickers. The Manchester United defender was seen interacting with supporters from a Panini football van situated at the Rockefeller Center.

Unexpected Appearance in the Big Apple

Maguire’s presence in New York is understood to be connected to a promotional initiative for Panini stickers coinciding with the upcoming World Cup. This comes after his omission from the 26-player tournament roster selected by manager Thomas Tuchel. Young fans encountered the footballer distributing sticker packs, with one expressing surprise at his location before requesting a photograph.

New York Excursions and Podcast Appearance

During his time in New York, Maguire also made an appearance at the Long Acre bar near Times Square to meet with Manchester United supporters. He was also a guest on Gary Lineker’s podcast, ‘The Rest is Football,’ where the discussion touched upon squad selections.

Lineker’s Comments and Maguire’s Reaction

On the podcast, Lineker alluded to the effectiveness of Tuchel’s decisions, particularly following a recent 4-2 victory against Croatia. He questioned whether the team’s performance might suggest the merit of certain player omissions. Recognizing the sensitive nature of the question in Maguire’s presence, Lineker quickly qualified his remark.

Maguire himself recounted a video call with Tuchel, during which he was informed of his exclusion from the squad. He stated that Tuchel cited a preference for the players who had secured qualification, adding that he could not offer a specific justification for leaving Maguire out.

Personal Feelings on Omission

The defender expressed significant disappointment over the decision, stating his belief that he could have contributed meaningfully to the team’s efforts this summer. He conveyed his shock and heartbreak, emphasizing his pride in representing his country and wishing his teammates well.

Defensive Selections and Other Player News

Tuchel’s selection for the defensive positions included Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Jarell Quansah, Dan Burn, and John Stones. Reports indicate that Maguire’s mother publicly voiced her dismay at her son’s exclusion, describing the decision as ‘disgraceful’ and expressing her disgust.

Other notable players not included in the squad are Phil Foden and Cole Palmer. Additionally, left-backs Lewis Hall and Luke Shaw have also been left out. The inclusion of Ivan Toney has drawn attention, given his limited recent playing time and absence from previous squads.

England is scheduled to play Ghana at the Boston Stadium on Tuesday, June 23.
