Two Illinois residents, Gino Gusich and Stephanie Lichay, both 35, face charges after allegedly breaking into a guest room at The Breakers, a luxurious oceanside hotel in Palm Beach, Florida. The incident targeted high-end designer items, including a Hermès Mini Kelly purse valued at over $32,500.
The Midnight Intrusion
Gusich and Lichay, who were guests at the hotel, took advantage of an unlocked door on their floor. Surveillance footage captured them entering the room at approximately 1:28 a.m. on a Sunday and exiting just 10 minutes later. They grabbed a $1,500 Chanel purse, $385 in cash, a $25 mirror, and a $20 lotion bottle, with the Hermès Mini Kelly as the prized target.
The Mini Kelly, favored by Hermès enthusiasts for its sleek, feminine design, rivals the iconic Birkin in exclusivity and demand.
Swift Confrontation and Arrest
As the suspects exited with the stolen goods—Lichay carrying the purses, lotion, and mirror, while Gusich held the cash—they encountered the room’s rightful owners returning from an outing. Police reports indicate the pair surrendered the items immediately upon confrontation.
Palm Beach officers arrived at the hotel around 1:41 a.m. following the report. Gusich and Lichay were arrested on site and charged with burglary and grand theft exceeding $20,000. They were booked into Palm Beach County Jail but later released on bond.
Legal Consequences
Under Florida law, both charges qualify as second-degree felonies, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. The Breakers, where entry-level rooms start at about $900 per night, maintains robust security measures that facilitated the quick response.
A hotel guest remarked, “You’d think people staying at such a nice place wouldn’t stoop that low, and they’d have the money and resources to not have to resort to anything like that.”
Hotel Statement on Security
The Breakers issued a statement emphasizing guest safety: “The Breakers Palm Beach places the highest priority on the safety and security of our team members and guests. Our security staff, surveillance measures, and coordination with law enforcement worked properly and enabled swift response to hold the suspects accountable.”
