Kelvin Fletcher encounters a setback in the newest episode of Fletcher’s Family Farm, airing this Sunday. The former Emmerdale actor and his wife Liz manage their Cheshire farm, where they recently expanded into arable farming to grow oats for porridge.
Oat Harvest Falls Short
The farm’s first oats in 20 years undergo testing at a local mill to check suitability for human consumption. Kelvin es excitement over the venture, noting the risks involved but affirming commitment to arable pursuits regardless of results.
Mill Managing Director James inspects the batch and identifies issues: “This is not a promising start. They look well, but they haven’t absorbed enough moisture to swell properly for porridge groats.” He attributes the problem to a long, hot, dry summer that limited rain during key growth stages.
James delivers the verdict: “Unfortunately, it’s not going to make the grade for porridge. But it’s not all lost, because there’s still nutritional value here.” The oats prove viable for animal feed instead.
Kelvin stays optimistic, stating to the camera: “I still feel quite optimistic, a little bit disappointed that we didn’t quite make the grade, but now I’ve got an understanding of what it takes.” He adds, “We still grew a great crop. I just didn’t quite have the umph.”
Heartwarming Puppy Surprise
Amid the disappointment, Liz receives joyful news during a vet visit. Vet Hugo confirms their dog Ginger is pregnant with puppies. Liz reacts emotionally: “Hugo, I think that is the best news you’ve ever given me.” When Hugo jokes about comparing it to cow news, she replies, “Well, it is a close one, but she is just our baby. Oh my god, you are having pups.”
Episode Highlights and Upcoming Plans
The season four premiere features Liz and Kelvin planning to double their flock and herd sizes, hiring local farmhand Josh for livestock management. Daughter Marnie meets her new Jacobs sheep and outlines her farming goals. The boys take a break from tractors to ride motorbikes, and the family gains approval to rebuild their farmhouse.
Fletcher’s Family Farm returns to ITV on Sunday at 11:30am.
