Understanding the Honours System’s Hierarchy

The honours system is structured with various tiers, each signifying a different level of recognition. Among the highest distinctions are the Order of the Companions of Honour, Knight/Dame Grand Cross, and Knight/Dame Commander of the Bath. These accolades are bestowed upon those who have made exceptional contributions in areas such as the arts, sciences, medicine, government, and public service.

Knighthoods and Damehoods: National Recognition

Individuals receiving knighthoods and damehoods are granted the prestigious titles of “Sir” or “Dame.” This recognition is reserved for those making substantial national contributions. Among this year’s recipients are acclaimed writers Julia Donaldson and Malorie Blackman, alongside prominent rugby league figure Kevin Sinfield.

Orders of the British Empire: Varying Levels of Impact

Further down the honours list are the Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). These awards acknowledge prominent national impacts (CBE), major local contributions (OBE), and significant long-term community service (MBE), respectively.
