Choupette’s Inheritance Dispute Leaves Fashion Icon’s Cat Lacking Funds
Choupette, the beloved cat of late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, is reportedly not receiving any of the substantial inheritance reportedly set aside for her. Despite claims that the feline was poised to become one of the wealthiest animals globally, sources now indicate that Choupette has received ‘absolutely nothing’ from the purported sums.
Following Lagerfeld’s passing in 2019, widespread speculation suggested that his cherished Birman cat would inherit millions. Reports at the time indicated a potential fortune reaching as high as £150 million. Furthermore, it was understood that Lagerfeld had specifically earmarked £1.5 million for Choupette, separate from his will, to ensure a life of continued luxury for his companion.
However, the individual entrusted with Choupette’s care, Françoise Caçote, who served as the cat’s primary caretaker and lady-in-waiting, has come forward with a starkly different account. Caçote, speaking to The Atlantic, stated that despite the reported financial provisions, no funds have been received.
Legal Battles Ensue Over Alleged Inheritance
Caçote revealed that she has been compelled to hire expensive legal counsel to pursue the inheritance in her own name, aiming to ensure that Lagerfeld’s final wishes are honored. “I’m doing my best to honour his wishes, especially that Choupette wants for nothing,” Caçote explained. “That’s my top priority.”
While the legal proceedings are ongoing, Caçote is personally supporting Choupette, ensuring the cat receives all necessary love, attention, and care. “She receives all the love, attention, and care she needs,” Caçote stated. “The most important thing is that she’s happy, surrounded by love and affection, and protected as Karl would have wanted. We remain hopeful that the situation will one day be resolved peacefully.”
Caçote admitted to feeling the pressure of public scrutiny but emphasized that Choupette’s well-being remains paramount. “What I do know is that Choupette is happy at home, and that’s the main thing,” she commented.
A Bond Forged in Love
Lagerfeld welcomed Choupette into his life in August 2011. Initially, the cat belonged to model Baptiste Giabiconi, who entrusted her to Lagerfeld’s care while he traveled. Upon Giabiconi’s return, Lagerfeld confessed he had fallen deeply in love with Choupette and could not bear to part with her.
In a 2013 interview, Lagerfeld famously expressed his profound affection for Choupette, stating that if it were legally permissible, he would marry her. “There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat,” he had said.
As for Choupette’s current activities during the interview, she was reportedly enjoying a quiet nap, a testament to the continued, albeit personally funded, life of comfort Lagerfeld intended for her.
