Eye-catching bug hotels modeled after iconic local landmarks have appeared near Burley Park Station in Leeds. Cardigan Community Centre and The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) charity collaborated to create and install four structures that mimic familiar sites.

Design and Purpose

These bug hotels offer safe shelters for insects and small creatures to hibernate, nest, and find refuge. Crafted from recycled pallets, the models replicate the Hyde Park Picture House, Cardigan Centre, Headingley Bear Pit, and Burley Park bandstand.

Col Powell, Community Hub Manager at TCV Hollybush in Kirkstall, noted that the installations serve as a striking feature commuters notice daily. “They are an eye-catching thing people will see on their commute if they are going through the station,” Powell stated.

Promoting Conservation

Powell hopes the creative designs spark discussions on environmental protection. “Hopefully they are done in a memorable enough way that it sticks in people’s heads and is more of an inspirational thing rather than browbeating people into feeling bad about not saving the planet,” he added.

TCV focuses on connecting communities to nature and maintaining green spaces. Similar efforts occur elsewhere, where local groups enhance station areas for better aesthetics and appeal. Powell highlighted the Hyde Park Picture House model as his favorite, calling the community collaboration “a really nice kind of community collaborative process that has ended up with these brilliant things.”
