Leicester City faces a stunning downfall, dropping to the third tier of English football exactly a decade after their miraculous Premier League triumph.

A Historic Upset Turns to Heartache

The club delivered one of sport’s greatest shocks in 2016 by clinching the Premier League title, outpacing giants like Arsenal and Tottenham. The next season, they advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals before falling to Atletico Madrid. Five years later, Leicester secured their first-ever FA Cup victory. However, fortunes reversed sharply thereafter.

Recent Struggles and Relegation Confirmed

Leicester dropped from the Premier League in 2023 but bounced back with promotion the following year, only to last one season before relegation struck again. A 2-2 draw against Hull on Tuesday night sealed their descent from the Championship to League One—their first time in the third tier in 17 years.

The team sits on 48 points from 44 matches, reduced by a six-point deduction for financial regulation breaches. Relegation is now official with two games left.

Manager and Chairman Respond

Manager Gary Rowett addressed the setback: “We have to learn. I think the club have to accept this is the horrible part of the journey of a football club. This club won the Premier League not too many moons ago. That was an incredible high at the time for the fans, for everyone associated with the club. I think everyone saw that as an amazing achievement. I think we can be equally as disappointed with how poor this moment is.”

Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha accepted responsibility: “Relegation to League One is now confirmed. As Chairman, that responsibility sits with me. There are no excuses. We have experienced the highest highs and now the lowest lows, and the pain is shared by all of us. I am truly sorry for the disappointment we have caused. I understand the strength of feeling among our supporters, and we do not take your support for granted, especially at moments like this. Our focus now is on what comes next. We will take the necessary decisions to move the Club forward, working together to rebuild, improve, and restore the standards expected of Leicester City. Our objective is clear – to respond strongly and compete to move this Club forward again. We will face this head-on. We will keep going.”
