Manchester United Targeting Major Midfield Reinforcements
Manchester United is reportedly preparing for a significant transfer window push, aiming to strengthen the squad after a strong finish to the season. The team’s improved form, overseen by manager Michael Carrick, secured a coveted Champions League spot. This European qualification underscores the importance of successful summer acquisitions as Carrick’s side gears up for challenges across multiple competitions.
Midfield Identified as Priority Area
The midfield has been singled out as a key area requiring enhancement. While an early agreement is understood to be in place for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, the club is actively exploring other options. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has emerged as a prominent target, with the 23-year-old also expected to feature for England at the upcoming World Cup.
Intense Competition for Anderson’s Signature
Anderson enjoyed an impressive season last term despite his club’s battle against relegation. His performances have also attracted attention from Manchester City, with Nottingham Forest reportedly valuing him at £100 million. Reports indicate that United is optimistic about securing Anderson’s commitment, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly prepared to meet the player’s wage expectations.
Nottingham Forest is understood to have already rejected an initial approach from Manchester City. While City is considered a frontrunner for the midfielder, sources suggest United believes they can persuade Anderson to choose Old Trafford over a move to their rivals. Reports indicate that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is willing to match Anderson’s wage demands should he opt for a move to United.
Anderson currently earns approximately £100,000 per week at Forest and is expected to command a significant wage increase, potentially around 50%, from either Manchester club. West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes is also mentioned as another midfield target being considered by United.
Goalkeeper Search Underway
In other transfer developments, Manchester United is reportedly exploring a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The 35-year-old made 22 league appearances for Daniel Farke’s team last season. Darlow is being considered as a potential deputy to Senne Lammens. It is suggested that Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana may not be part of the club’s long-term plans, making Darlow an attractive backup option.
Darlow, who has also drawn interest from Tottenham Hotspur, is anticipated to be available on a free transfer as his contract with Leeds nears its end. Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is also being reported as an alternative homegrown target, having started his career at Manchester United.
