Illegal migrants crossing the English Channel from France now use vastly larger boats, endangering lives on the perilous journey, according to a firsthand inspection by home and security editor Mark White.

White visited Border Force officials to examine the vessels up close. He stated: “Back in 2018 this was the kind of boat that you would see coming across the English Channel, about two metres long, often stolen from the harbours along the French coast. Today, though, they’re made to measure. This boat here shows the absurdity of the term small boats, because it’s anything but.”

Safety Risks of Oversized Vessels

Officials displayed a large black inflatable boat exceeding 10 meters in length, capable of carrying up to 80 or 90 migrants. A Border Force spokeswoman explained that the bottoms frequently tear out, and glue securing ropes to the sides often fails in rough seas.

White highlighted the onboard items provided by smugglers: “Tyre inner tubes that they use as life jackets, cut up canisters to scoop out the water when it starts to fill up.”

These overcrowded, flimsy crafts pose severe dangers. White noted: “These boats are obviously far from safe. With many migrants crammed on board, these flimsy vessels can quickly disintegrate.”

Social Media Backlash

Online reactions reflect widespread concern. One user posted: “They’re not smashing the gangs. Maybe one or two, but another pops up.” Another remarked: “The government probably sends them back to Calais ready for the next influx!”
