Drivers exhibiting aggressive behavior and poor parking habits have transformed a narrow street outside a Midlands primary school into a hazardous zone, prompting police intervention. Local residents express fury over frequent road rage incidents, near misses, and persistent queues right outside their homes. The area resembles an F1 pit lane, with vehicles encroaching on pavements daily.
Police Respond to Collisions
Derbyshire Constabulary’s safer neighbourhood team issued a stern warning after two collisions occurred minutes apart outside Kilburn Primary School. These incidents caused major disruptions and underscored ongoing problems with unsafe parking during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Officers emphasized key rules: avoid parking at the school entrance, on zig-zag markings, solid white lines, or anywhere that blocks visibility or traffic flow. “Parking on zig-zags or solid white lines is an offence and creates serious risks at an already busy location,” the force stated. “These restrictions protect children, parents, pedestrians, and other road users.”
Street Observations and Resident Complaints
During a midday visit to Highfield Road on a weekday, observers noted that half the street allows parking while the school-side lane handles traffic flow. Vehicles occasionally pull into available spots to yield, exacerbating congestion.
Sarah Jennings, a Highfield Road resident, described the situation: “Even at the best of times, I’ve seen road rage, near misses and queues. It’s relentless. People just seem to care only about themselves. They’d rather save five seconds and hold everyone else up for five minutes than simply let someone out. I find it infuriating. Another thing is, so many people have these great huge cars and don’t know how to drive them. The road wouldn’t be an issue if people knew the width of their own cars, or even how to reverse, which some people think is impossible.”
Another local resident, who walks to the school, added: “Selfish, horrible drivers honking their horns all the time and often bullying people. It’s the usual BMW and Audi drivers. More money than sense, some of them. Come here after 3pm and it changes. It’s like an F1 pit lane, people running around all over the place and cars all over the pavements. It’s embarrassing and I’m glad the police have taken note – but they need to come and spend the afternoon here. They’d make a fortune fining people.”
School Leader Addresses Concerns
Rob Hull, headteacher at Kilburn Junior School, highlighted the issue: “Traffic congestion is an ongoing issue on the local roads in Kilburn, particularly at drop-off and pick-up time. Whilst most people within the school community park appropriately, in the designated areas within the village, there are unfortunately some people who choose to park where it is most convenient to themselves, often leading to greater congestion and compromising the safety of children and local residents.”
