Mina the Hollower, a highly anticipated top-down adventure reminiscent of classic Zelda titles, arrives on Steam on May 29 following six years of development.
Game Overview
This pixel-art gem from Yacht Club Games, creators of Shovel Knight, delivers an orthodox take on the genre. Its visuals closely mimic 8-bit aesthetics with modern polish and fluidity. Influences range from Castlevania to Bloodborne, setting it apart from lighter Zelda fare like Link’s Awakening. The protagonist, a mousy hollower named Mina, navigates perilous environments in this Kickstarter-backed project launched in 2022.
Official Announcement
Yacht Club Games shared the news via a short video on X, showcasing Mina battling rushing water columns, dodging giant brains, and zapping foes with electricity. The post hypes it as “one of the greatest top-down adventures ever to be delivered directly to your soul for less than 20 bucks,” confirming the affordable price point.
Development Challenges
Work began in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent industry downturn caused multiple delays. Originally targeting a 2023 launch, the title faced repeated postponements. Studio founder Cris Velasco addressed the stakes late last year: “It’s make-or-break for sure.” He added, “If we sold 500,000 copies, then we would be golden. If we sold even 200,000, that would be really, really great. If we sold, like, 100,000, that’s not so good.”
The late-May release window remains relatively open, with few major competitors aside from 007 First Light, positioning it well in the indie space.
