Tragedy in Modesto: Family Devastated by Brutal Home Invasion
Authorities are investigating a horrific triple homicide that resulted in the deaths of a grandmother, her daughter, and a two-week-old infant. The brutal stabbings occurred Thursday morning in Modesto, California, a city located approximately 90 miles east of San Francisco.
Victims Identified, Suspect Apprehended
The victims have been identified as 54-year-old Maria Sylvia Nunez-Villalobos, her 23-year-old daughter Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez, and the infant son, Mateo Gonzalez, who was only two weeks old. The Modesto Police Department responded to a call at a residence on Monterey Avenue around 9:20 AM.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Gonzalez-Nunez had sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Nunez-Villalobos and baby Mateo were found shortly thereafter. While Nunez-Villalobos was also pronounced deceased, the infant was transported to a local hospital but later died from his injuries. Investigations indicate the infant also suffered stab wounds.
Joaquin Escoto, 28, was taken into custody after being found hiding in a nearby residence. Police believe Escoto was in a relationship with Gonzalez-Nunez, though the exact nature of their connection remains under investigation. Escoto is believed to have resided in the home with the victims.
Uninjured Child Placed Under Protective Custody
A three-year-old child was also found inside the residence and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Authorities have identified Escoto as the father of this uninjured child, whose custody has since been transferred to Child Protective Services.
Suspect’s Immigration Status and Prior Record
Reports indicate Escoto, who was born in Jalisco, Mexico, had been deported from the United States on three previous occasions. He was reportedly arrested in June for driving under the influence. Despite Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeking his deportation, he was released following that arrest. His continued presence in California is reportedly linked to the state’s sanctuary laws, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Escoto faces three counts of murder, along with special circumstance enhancements and charges related to the use of a deadly weapon. Authorities also revealed an outstanding arrest warrant for Escoto concerning a prior driving under the influence case. He is currently being held without bail at the Stanislaus County Jail.
Community Mourns ‘Devastating Loss’
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral and counseling expenses for the grieving family. A description on the fundraising page describes the deaths as a “heartbreaking loss that words cannot adequately express.” Nunez-Villalobos is remembered as a “cherished grandmother who loved her family deeply,” while her daughter, Gonzalez-Nunez, is honored as a “devoted mother whose love for her children was endless.” The infant Mateo is remembered as a “precious baby whose smile and innocence brought happiness to everyone around him.” The memorial statement further expressed the family’s devastation, noting that “in a single moment, generations of love, memories, and dreams for the future were taken from us.” As of Saturday, the fundraiser had garnered approximately $30,500.
A family member, who identified himself only as Javier, shared his family’s profound grief but also expressed a sense of relief at Escoto’s apprehension. “You can’t really do anything to bring them back no more, but we just know that he’s going to be in there for a long time, suffering, thinking about what he did,” he stated. He added, “That’s what’s going to be killing him.”
