Quick Actions Save Umpire After Cardiac Arrest Mid-Game
A dramatic scene unfolded during a local Australian Rules Football match when a veteran umpire collapsed, suffering a cardiac arrest. Thanks to the swift and decisive actions of a mother and daughter, both registered nurses, the umpire’s life was saved.
Incredible Rescue During Coldstream vs. Silvan Match
The incident occurred during the Round 7 seniors match between Coldstream and Silvan in a Victorian competition. 68-year-old John Bonfadini, the umpire, suddenly fell ill and collapsed on the field. The game came to an immediate halt as players and spectators rushed to his aid.
Daughter’s Urgent Call to Action
Georgia Ploegsma, who was present to watch her partner and Coldstream captain, Darcy Fritsch, play, was urged by him to assist. “I was looking and had my leg over the fence ready to go, and then I heard… Darcy screaming ‘Georgia, quick, come onto the ground’,” Georgia recounted. Despite wearing slides and unable to run effectively, she immediately took action.
Mother Joins Daughter in Lifesaving Effort
Georgia kicked off her footwear and discarded her drink before sprinting onto the field. Her mother, Rachel Ploegsma, who was also attending the game, heard the calls for assistance and the urgent need for a defibrillator. She too ran onto the field to help.
“When I got to the middle my mum was there, she was on the other side of the field and heard someone call out for a defib so she ran out too,” Georgia explained. “We got to the middle at the same time, looked at each other and were like, ‘sh**, we need to do something here’.”
Recognizing the Severity of the Situation
Observing Bonfadini’s condition, the nurses immediately recognized the critical nature of his medical emergency. “All the trainers were there trying to get a response out of him, I looked at him straight away and knew that he was not good. He was blue, not breathing, mum tried to find a pulse and couldn’t, we just looked at each other and were like ‘nup, we need to do this’,” Georgia stated.
CPR and Defibrillator Administration
The pair worked seamlessly to administer life-saving measures. Georgia began chest compressions while Rachel provided mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The arrival of a defibrillator proved crucial in their efforts.
“I started CPR on him and mum was doing mouth to mouth, and then the defib got brought out to us,” Georgia said. “I didn’t even remember what was going on around me, I was just working so hard to save someone’s life and when he took that break it was ‘thank god’.”
Umpire’s Recovery and Future Plans
John Bonfadini is now scheduled to undergo triple heart bypass surgery. He expressed optimism about his recovery, anticipating a return to his passions within approximately 12 weeks. “Once the pipes are clean and they’ve done the bypass I won’t have a problem and I’ll be back umpiring and doing everything normal within 12 weeks,” Bonfadini confirmed. He also highlighted a positive outcome of the event, noting that it has raised awareness about the possibility of underlying health issues even in seemingly fit individuals.
