Latvia triggered a major airspace alert early today after unidentified drones penetrated its territory, prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets. The unmanned aircraft ventured approximately 40 miles into the country, heightening tensions amid ongoing regional conflicts.

Drone Crash and Immediate Response

One drone crashed at an oil depot in Rēzekne, a city in eastern Latvia, but caused no fire. Latvian authorities launched an urgent investigation to determine if the incursions represent a hostile act by Russia or Ukrainian UAVs that strayed off course due to electronic warfare interference during strikes on Russian targets.

Public Alerts and Safety Measures

Airspace threat alerts and mobile notifications reached residents in the Ludza and Balvi districts of the Latgale region at 4:09 a.m. and 4:43 a.m. Officials instructed people to remain indoors. Schools in Rēzekne, as well as the Rēzekne and Ludza districts, cancelled classes, while students in Balvi shifted to remote learning.

NATO warplanes patrolled the area to counter the continuing threat, as regional security concerns escalate.
