A Victorian court has heard claims that former AFL star Neil Elvis ‘Nicky’ Winmar slammed a woman’s head against a wooden door with enough force to crack it during an alleged assault in May 2025.

Key Details from the Hearing

The unidentified woman provided testimony on the opening day of the contested hearing at Bendigo Magistrates’ Court. The 60-year-old Winmar has entered not guilty pleas to charges of unlawful assault and intentionally causing injury. He sat in court with his head in his hands as the woman recounted feeling “petrified” and fearing for her life during the incident in Cohuna, northern Victoria.

Woman’s Account of the Alleged Attack

The woman described Winmar approaching from behind while screaming, grabbing her arm, twisting it, and then dragging her by her ponytail. “I was actually fearful of my life,” she stated in court.

Emergency Call and Police Evidence

Court proceedings included an emotional Triple Zero call from the evening, in which the woman, hiding at the time, reported being hit. When asked to identify Winmar, she replied, “they’ll know him, he’s a former AFL player.”

Body-worn camera footage from responding officers showed the woman wrapped in a blanket on the floor. She informed the officer that Winmar had been abusive both verbally and physically but declined hospital treatment.

Additional witnesses are set to testify as the hearing continues.
