The Making of a Modern Footballing Star
Rayan Cherki, the dynamic midfielder captivating audiences with his flair and skill, has rapidly emerged as a significant talent on the global football stage. His journey from the youth ranks of Lyon to becoming a key figure in a top European club has been marked by dedication, development, and an undeniable passion for the game.
A Glimpse from the Past
Paolo Rongoni, who previously served as head of strength and conditioning at Lyon during Cherki’s formative years, recalls a conversation he had with the young player a couple of years ago. Rongoni, now part of the Algerian national team staff, had hoped Cherki might represent Algeria, given his heritage. However, Cherki ultimately opted to represent his birth nation, France, where he has since made his debut for the senior squad.
“He was very kind when we spoke,” Rongoni shared. “He is a good person, a funny person but a really good person.” This sentiment underscores the character behind the on-field brilliance.
Captivating the Fans
Cherki has quickly endeared himself to supporters with his performances. His debut campaign has been punctuated by spectacular goals, audacious assists, and moments of pure skill. His own words, that he ‘plays to put a smile on fans’ faces,’ perfectly encapsulate his entertaining style. Yet, beneath the dazzling footwork lies a formidable work ethic and an unyielding desire for self-improvement.
From Gym Work to Game Sense
The midfielder’s rise has been significantly shaped by his commitment to development, a trait honed during his time at Lyon under Rongoni’s guidance. While Cherki’s natural inclination is towards having a ball at his feet, Rongoni emphasizes the player’s dedication to the less glamorous aspects of training.
“I can say Rayan doesn’t like work,” Rongoni chuckled, reflecting on the common preference of many players for on-field action over gym sessions. “But he is a worker and with me he was a worker. But he liked the ball, like every player like him. He is a football player, he doesn’t like to stay in the gym or run, like every player. But there was never any conflict or anything like this. I think his success was his work, he just missed the football sense but today he has it.”
Developing a Complete Player
Cherki’s vision on the pitch is now widely recognized. He consistently identifies passing lanes and attacking opportunities that elude others, and his goal-scoring ability is a testament to his evolving game. Behind the scenes, he has embraced coaching and dedicated himself to refining his skills, earning the trust of his managers and the respect of his peers.
Rongoni remembers Cherki as an exceptional talent with a strong personality, even in his teenage years. “I remember an amazing talent, a young guy with very strong potential, with a personality,” he recalled. “Maybe when he was young he had a strong personality! In that moment, he was two people – a young guy and an amazing football player. Anytime we had a conflict with attitude or behaviour, it was because he was young, 16 or 17 years old, but an incredible talent.”
Discussions with Cherki’s brother about diet and physical conditioning were instrumental in shaping his professional approach. Rigorous strength and conditioning sessions, conducted multiple times a week, were crucial in building his physique and overall game.
A Future Star in the Making
Cherki’s journey through Lyon’s academy and his early debut at just 16 years old marked him as a player with immense potential. While his innate ball control and technical ability were always evident, developing a deeper understanding of the game was a key focus.
“It was not easy for him because he has a talent and a feeling with the ball but not a football sense,” Rongoni observed. “He didn’t understand what was happening around him. He controlled himself and the ball perfectly, but around him was another world. But with time and coaching he has understood this process with movement and the pass and today he is a complete player. I am really happy for him and his career.”
