Rotherham Police Launch Investigation into Disturbing Footage
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into a video that has surfaced online, depicting police officers engaging with a group of young girls in what appears to be a forceful altercation involving batons and Tasers on a Rotherham street. The incident, which reportedly occurred over the weekend, has prompted widespread concern and accusations of excessive force.
South Yorkshire Police have described the footage as “nothing short of shocking” and have initiated a formal probe to ascertain the full details of the event. The video, widely circulated on social media platforms, shows an officer confronting a group, stating, “You are being dispersed for a breach of the peace.” The situation escalates when one of the young individuals begins to push the officer, who then responds by shoving her backward, causing her to lose her balance.
Escalation of the Confrontation
Further interactions show the officer pushing two other girls, who then approach him in a confrontational manner, shouting. A bystander can be heard remarking on the officer’s demeanor toward the girls. As the crowd around the officer grows, he is seen drawing his baton and directing it towards the group. Two of the girls attempt to disarm him, but he breaks free, leading to one girl falling to the ground.
The person filming the incident expresses alarm, exclaiming, “He has got the baton. What are they doing?” The officer then maintains a raised baton and pushes another girl away. Subsequently, another officer is reportedly pushed by a member of the group. This officer appears to react aggressively, punching the individual and shoving her backward, causing her to fall.
Response and Review Process
The situation intensifies further with the arrival of two additional officers, clad in black attire. They are seen pointing Tasers at the group and issuing commands to “get back.”
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police stated, “The short clip on social media of the police response to an incident in Rotherham over the weekend appears nothing short of shocking. Our Professional Standards Department is reviewing this and all available footage, including Body Worn Video, of the full response to the 999 call to understand what happened before, during, and after what is publicly available. Their assessment will inform our next steps. At South Yorkshire Police, we want our officers to be professional and their actions to be lawful, proportionate, and fair.”
The investigation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to, during, and immediately following the public footage, with the ultimate goal of ensuring professional, lawful, proportionate, and fair conduct by officers.
