Strategic Bombers Conduct Extended Mission Over Northern Seas
Russia has conducted significant nuclear bomber drills in international airspace north of the United Kingdom. The exercise involved Tupolev Tu-160 supersonic strategic bombers undertaking a 16-hour mission over the Barents and Norwegian Seas. These waters are situated to the north of the Shetland Islands, the UK’s northernmost archipelago, lying between Norway and Iceland.
During the operation, NATO’s F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets were deployed to intercept and monitor the Russian intercontinental strategic bombers. The exercise took place against a backdrop of ongoing high tensions stemming from Russia’s continued military actions in Ukraine.
Details of the Russian Exercise
The defense ministry in Moscow confirmed that the Tu-160 bombers were accompanied by MiG-31 aircraft. The mission included practicing in-flight refueling capabilities. The Norwegian Air Force also participated in tracking the Russian aircraft.
The Tupolev Tu-160, identified by NATO with the reporting name ‘Blackjack,’ is recognized as the largest and heaviest combat aircraft to have entered operational service. It possesses the capacity to carry up to 45 tonnes of weaponry internally, including both nuclear and conventional long-range cruise missiles.
Escalating Rhetoric on Nuclear Weapons
The bomber drills occurred concurrently with reports of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov advocating for the use of nuclear weapons. According to an eyewitness account from a closed meeting of the Council on Foreign and Defence Policy, when questioned about the potential use of atomic weapons, Lavrov reportedly stated, “Well, I would still use them.”
Earlier this month, Lavrov had indicated that nuclear war remained a possibility if the West did not yield to Russia’s demands concerning the conflict in Ukraine. He previously warned, “This state of affairs poses serious threats to global security. A direct confrontation between NATO and Russia could rapidly escalate into an exchange of nuclear strikes, with catastrophic consequences.”
Developments in Ukraine
Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued its efforts to strike Russian positions within and around the annexed region of Crimea. Reports indicate that oil terminals and military facilities in the area have been targeted and set ablaze. Ukrainian authorities express confidence in their ability to degrade Russia’s control over the Black Sea peninsula, where the summer tourist season has been significantly impacted, leading to widespread fuel shortages and regular power outages. Concerns over potential strikes on the £3 billion Crimean Bridge have also led to its closure on occasion.
