Cyberattack Confirmed at Tata Electronics; Operations Unaffected
Tata Electronics, a significant player in the electronics and semiconductor manufacturing sector, has confirmed it was the target of a cybersecurity incident. The company stated that its operational activities remained unaffected despite the breach.
The confirmation follows claims by a threat actor known as World Leaks, who asserted they had exfiltrated approximately 630GB of data from Tata Electronics’ systems. The stolen archive reportedly includes sensitive files related to major clients, including schematics for Apple and Tesla products. Researchers have also identified references to other prominent tech firms such as Pegatron, Foxconn, and Qualcomm within the leaked data.
Extortion Attempt and Data Details
Analysis of the leaked files suggests that the compromised data contains sensitive manufacturing and engineering information. Reports indicate that Tata Electronics is currently being subjected to an extortion attempt by the threat actors, though specific ransom demands and negotiation progress remain unclear.
World Leaks claims to have obtained 204,341 files in total. The purported contents include schematics for Apple and Tesla devices, scans of passports, and other proprietary documents. Security researchers have noted the presence of hundreds of references to Apple and Tesla within the dataset, including a folder labeled “com.apple.factorydata.” Some documents were explicitly marked as proprietary or confidential.
Broader Industry Connections
While the leaked data directly implicates Apple and Tesla, further investigation by researchers has uncovered references to other key industry players. Files mentioning Pegatron, Foxconn, and Qualcomm were found within the exfiltrated archive. However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that these other companies were directly breached.
Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, plays a crucial role in the supply chain for major technology companies. It is understood to be responsible for a significant portion of India’s iPhone production, supplying Apple with components like back panels and enclosures. For Tesla, the company has been a supplier of chips, circuit board assemblies, and vehicle motor controller units.
