Footy Legend Shows Remarkable Recovery After Severe Truck Accident

AFL icon Tony Modra is showing a remarkable recovery following a catastrophic truck accident that nearly claimed his life last Thursday night. Close friends have revealed that the 57-year-old, a former star for the Adelaide Crows, has woken from surgery and, crucially, has not sustained any concussion or brain injury.

Facial Injuries and Subsequent Surgeries

Modra underwent extensive surgery on Friday to address severe facial injuries, including his jaw, cheekbone, and eye socket. He is scheduled for further surgical procedures as his recovery progresses. His wife, Erica Modra, provided a positive update on Saturday, confirming he had been woken up and was conscious.

Mark Ricciuto, a former teammate and close friend, shared details of Modra’s condition. “It’s been a positive weekend, it’s definitely fair to say,” Ricciuto stated on Monday morning. “He had a really long day on Friday, getting operations on his jaw, cheekbone and eye socket. Saturday I got a great message… saying that they’ve woken him up, and that was awesome.”

Remarkable Resilience and Memory Retention

Despite the severity of his injuries and the extensive operations, Modra reportedly remembers the events of the crash. “He remembered everything that happened, if you can believe that,” Ricciuto added. “So no concussion, no brain injury, which is a huge positive… great news he’s got no brain issues, [but it’s] a little bit tough emotionally to get through reliving what happened.”

Modra has since been moved out of the intensive care unit but faces more surgery. Ricciuto described his survival and current condition as a “miracle.”

Heroic Actions by Young Son

In a testament to quick thinking, Modra’s 14-year-old son, Luke, played a vital role in ensuring his father received prompt medical attention. Erica Modra recounted that Luke immediately called emergency services and utilized a phone-finding application to relay his father’s precise location.

The incident occurred near the Modra family’s sheep and cattle farm, approximately 90 kilometers south of Adelaide. Modra was reportedly able to pull his truck over after the initial impact, preventing further chaos.

Tributes from the Football Community

The football community has rallied around Modra, with fans at Adelaide Oval applauding at the six-minute mark of the Crows’ recent match against the Demons, honoring the legendary player who wore the No. 6 guernsey. Crows coach Matthew Nicks acknowledged the positive news, stating, “We’re hearing positive thoughts, there’s a lot of positive news coming back.”

Tony Modra is celebrated as one of the AFL’s most spectacular players, having scored 588 goals during his career with the Adelaide Crows and Fremantle between 1992 and 2001.
