President Trump Expresses Willingness to Meet Iran’s New Supreme Leader

United States President Donald Trump has stated he would be “honoured” to meet Iran’s new supreme leader, a sentiment expressed three months after a U.S. military operation led to the death of the previous leader’s family.

On February 28, a joint operation by U.S. and Israeli forces targeted key Iranian locations. This operation resulted in the death of the former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and serious injury to his son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. Following these events, Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership of Iran. In response, Iran conducted retaliatory attacks on various Middle Eastern sites and disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

When questioned by reporters on Thursday, May 4, about a potential meeting with Mojtaba Khamenei, President Trump remarked, “I don’t want to meet, but if I did meet, I’d be honoured to meet him.” He added, “If we make a deal, it’s possible that I would meet him. I’d be okay with that.”

The military operation, codenamed “Operation Epic Fury,” not only claimed the life of Mojtaba Khamenei’s father but also his wife and child.

Assessing Tensions and Future Relations

Responding to a question about whether he believed Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei harbored animosity, President Trump commented, “I would say I’m not his favourite person.” He further elaborated on the new Iranian leader’s public perception, stating, “He’s probably a professional. In some circles he has a very good reputation actually. Sometimes people say bad, but a lot of people say bad about me. It’s totally false, of course.”

A fragile ceasefire has been maintained between the U.S. and Iran for several weeks. However, efforts to establish a lasting peace agreement have not yet been successful. The risk of further escalation remains a concern, particularly after both nations engaged in attacks on military installations across the Middle East earlier this week.
