Vance Details Unofficial White House Attire Expectations

Vice President JD Vance has shed light on President Donald Trump’s distinctive dress code for those in his inner circle, even specifying preferences for footwear when meeting in the Oval Office. Vance shared these insights during an appearance on the ‘Hang Out with Sean Hannity’ podcast on Thursday, which coincided with a press tour for his new book, ‘Communion.’

The ‘Uniform’ and Subtle Criticisms

During the podcast, Vance recounted a moment where he and host Sean Hannity were both dressed in white button-down shirts without ties. Vance humorously anticipated Trump’s reaction, suggesting the President might question their lack of ties. He then elaborated on the unofficial uniform Trump expects from cabinet members: a navy suit, a solid-colored tie, and black shoes.

‘He’ll bust the chops of some of the cabinet members if they’ve got brown shoes on,’ Vance revealed, indicating that Trump pays close attention to these details. This informal dress code, Vance explained, stems from a broader sentiment.

Respect for the Office

‘But the president has a sense that you ought to respect the place. You ought to respect the institution, respect the office, and one of the ways you do that is by dressing like a normal person,’ Vance stated. He recalled an instance where Trump commented on his son, Donald Trump Jr., for wearing a ‘spread collar,’ which Vance interpreted not as harsh criticism but as a playful jab.

Humor and Misinterpretation

Vance characterized these comments as a sign of affection and a reflection of how men often relate to each other. He suggested that this aspect of Trump’s communication style is often misunderstood by the media. ‘I think that it’s one of the things that the media has never understood about Donald Trump,’ Vance remarked. ‘They’ve never understood his humor. They’ve never understood how he relates to people. And so they always misinterpret or straight up lie about some of the things he says.’

Political Banter and Comedic Timing

The conversation also touched upon Trump’s tendency to playfully pit political figures against each other. Hannity brought up Trump’s past polling of an audience at a Rose Garden event regarding potential 2028 presidential candidates, specifically mentioning Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Vance dismissed these instances as lighthearted banter, emphasizing Trump’s ‘unbelievable comedic timing’ and calling him ‘off the charts funny.’

This relaxed discussion stood in contrast to some of Vance’s other recent public appearances, including a more contentious interview on ‘The View,’ where he addressed sensitive topics such as the administration’s handling of the Epstein files and the situation in Iran. A request for comment to the White House was referred to the vice president’s office.
