Dramatic Night Operation Sees Royal Marines Board Vessel

In a significant maritime operation, Britain’s Armed Forces have intercepted a Russian oil tanker identified as part of a ‘shadow fleet’ as it attempted to transit the English Channel. The boarding occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the successful interception, stating in a social media post, “In the early hours of this morning, I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel.” He emphasized the strategic importance of the action, noting, “This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin’s war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide.”

The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to all personnel involved, acknowledging, “I want to thank those involved, including our Armed Forces and law enforcement officers who keep this country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

The operation highlights ongoing efforts to disrupt financial and logistical support for the conflict in Ukraine, particularly concerning vessels involved in circumventing international sanctions. The term ‘shadow fleet’ generally refers to tankers that operate with opaque ownership and insurance, often used to transport oil from sanctioned nations.
