Three Royal Navy Crew Perish in Devon Helicopter Crash

The three Royal Navy personnel who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Devon have been identified. Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, and Petty Officer Owen Green were all killed when a Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed in a field on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses and local residents have lauded the crew, with some calling them ‘heroes’ for their actions during the incident. Reports indicate that the pilots deliberately avoided nearby homes and a Travelodge hotel, potentially saving lives.

Britain’s Only Female Royal Navy Commando Among Victims

Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, 31, was recognized as Britain’s only serving female Royal Navy Commando. This significant achievement had previously been acknowledged by NATO. Beyond her military career, Lieutenant Fisher was also known for her appearances on popular ITV shows, including “Take Me Out” and “Ninja Warrior UK.”

Witnesses described the helicopter flying at a very low altitude before it crashed and exploded near the village of Sourton Down, close to Okehampton. Aerial imagery from the crash site revealed debris scattered across the field.

A Life Dedicated to Service and Achievement

Lieutenant Fisher, who grew up in Virginia Water, Surrey, graduated from Imperial College London in 2016 with a degree in geology. Her dedication to service began earlier, participating in the University Army Officer Training Corps in 2012 and the University Air Squadron in 2013. A talented sportswoman, she also represented Great Britain at the European Age Group Triathlon Championships in 2021.

After a period in a support role for a specialist maritime unit, Lieutenant Fisher successfully completed the rigorous 16-week All Arms Commando Course. This demanding qualification, undertaken by very few women, led to her becoming the Royal Navy’s sole female commando.

Her family released a heartfelt statement, describing Lily-Mae as an “extraordinary woman, daughter, sister, and partner.” They emphasized her zest for life, her drive to achieve and inspire others, and the “immeasurable hole” her passing has left. They have requested privacy during this difficult time.

Official Condolences and Investigation Underway

Sir Gwyn, the head of the Navy, expressed his profound sadness at the loss of the three crew members. He extended his deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragedy. He also acknowledged the swift response from Devon and Cornwall Police and the search and rescue teams. An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently active.

The King is reportedly aware of the incident and will extend his condolences privately to the families. The Princess of Wales, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm, shared her sorrow online, stating that she and Prince William “hold their families and friends in our hearts at this very difficult time.”

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the families of the deceased personnel have been informed. Defence Secretary John Healey described himself as “devastated” by the loss of personnel who “served with excellence and will be much missed.” An MoD spokesperson reiterated the confirmation of the three deaths during a training exercise and expressed sympathy for the families and friends.

The incident occurred around 4 am on Wednesday, June 3, near Sourton, Devon. Further details are expected to be released following the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
