Brazil Secures Victory in Sophia Wilson’s Return Match

The United States women’s national soccer team experienced a setback in their preparations for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, falling 2-1 to Brazil in a friendly match held in São Paulo on Saturday. The anticipated return of forward Sophia Wilson to the team was unfortunately overshadowed by the late goals from the host nation.

Early Lead Evaporates Quickly

The Americans started brightly, with Sophia Wilson marking her return to the national team in the second minute. She scored her first goal since 2024, having taken time off in 2025 to welcome her daughter. Wilson’s impact was immediate, as she capitalized on a defensive lapse, dispossessed a Brazilian player, and fired a shot into the far left post.

However, Brazil responded swiftly, scoring twice within a three-minute span to take the lead. In the 11th minute, Taina Maranhao found the back of the net with a powerful header from a corner kick, exploiting a significant gap in the American defense. Just three minutes later, in the 14th minute, Bia Zaneratto added a second goal. This score originated from a US defensive error, with a breakdown in communication leaving Zaneratto unmarked in the box for an easy left-footed finish.

Defensive Struggles and Goalkeeping Heroics

Despite the early offensive success, the US team appeared disorganized in their defensive efforts during the crucial moments. Goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made three vital saves in the first half to prevent Brazil from extending their lead further.

Key Moments and Missed Opportunities

In the second half, the United States sought an equalizer. Near the hour mark, Claire Hutton unleashed a direct shot from distance, forcing a sharp save from Brazilian goalkeeper Lele, who tipped the ball away with her right hand. Lele was later substituted in the 81st minute due to a leg injury, having made two saves during her time on the field.

The final opportunity for the US to salvage a draw came deep into second-half stoppage time. Following a restart, a bouncing ball narrowly eluded the outstretched foot of Jaedyn Shaw at the six-yard box, sealing the victory for Brazil.

This match marked the US women’s team’s first away fixture against Brazil since December 2014.
