The suspect who attempted to breach the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner ballroom armed with guns and knives crossed the country prior to the event, targeting members of the Trump administration, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on Sunday.

Suspect’s Travel and Intentions

Officials indicate the individual traveled by train from California to Chicago and then to Washington, D.C. He checked into the hotel hosting the high-profile event on Saturday night. Law enforcement has identified the 31-year-old suspect from Torrance, California, as Cole Tomas Allen.

Examination of the suspect’s electronic devices and writings suggests he aimed to attack administration officials attending the dinner. He rushed toward the ballroom at the Washington Hilton but was subdued in a chaotic confrontation that led to gunfire, with President Donald Trump rushed offstage and attendees taking cover under tables.

“It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche said during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Incident Details and Aftermath

The suspect acquired the firearms in the past two years, according to Blanche. He remains uncooperative and faces multiple charges on Monday.

Video footage shows the suspect evading security barricades as Secret Service agents pursued him. One officer sustained a gunshot wound to a bullet-resistant vest and is recovering. The suspect was detained unharmed but underwent hospital evaluation.

“He failed,” Blanche emphasized on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “Law enforcement did their jobs.”

Background on the Suspect

Social media profiles linked to the suspect portray him as a well-educated tutor and amateur video game developer. A May 2025 LinkedIn photo, showing him in cap and gown after earning a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, matches images of the detained individual. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, earned in 2017, and participated in a Christian student fellowship and a campus Nerf gun group.

Event Disruption

The breach occurred shortly after the dinner began. Secret Service and authorities secured the venue as hundreds of guests sheltered under tables amid gasps and shouts. A “God Bless America” chant emerged as the president exited the stage. National Guard units and helicopters mobilized outside. Organizers canceled the event and plan to reschedule it.
