McDonald’s offers budget-friendly meals in many places, starting as low as £1.19 on saver menus. Yet, one outlet in Switzerland consistently shocks diners with steep prices, where lunch for two often exceeds £40.

Zermatt’s Alpine McDonald’s Location

This standout branch sits in Zermatt, a renowned ski resort village in the Swiss Alps and gateway to the Matterhorn, one of the world’s highest ski areas. The restaurant occupies a traditional Alpine chalet-style building with wooden interiors that create a cozy log cabin atmosphere.

Unique Menu Offerings

The menu mirrors global staples but includes Swiss exclusives like The M burger with two beef patties, melted cheese, lettuce, and crispy onions. Diners can also find chicken wings, pepper potatoes, chicken paprika burgers, Big Tasty meals, Nutella sundaes, Swiss chocolate pies, McPops, and a gluten-free selection.

Eye-Watering Price Comparison

Social media highlights Zermatt’s McDonald’s as potentially the world’s priciest, though verifying against over 44,000 global locations proves challenging amid rising costs and franchise pricing flexibility. Key items dwarf UK equivalents: a Big Mac costs 7.20 CHF (£6.80) versus £5.11; a 20-piece McNuggets sharebox runs 18.80 CHF (£17.74) compared to £8.79; fizzy drinks nearly double UK prices; and large fries hit 6.40 CHF (£6) against £2.59.

Visitor Experiences

TikTok user Abbey Sadleir documented her visit, sharing a receipt totaling 53 CHF for two meals, an extra veggie burger, and dessert—equivalent to £50.

Cameron Guzzo spent $54 (under £40) on two meals including a Royal Bacon Cheeseburger Friends meal, The M burger, pepper potatoes, apple juice, and espresso. He noted, “It’s decent, but it’s still just McDonald’s, definitely not worth $54.”

User @danielleoutdoors_ praised the chalet vibes and unique local items, adding, “The Big Mac meal on its own was over $16 (£11), and I think we spent $50 (£36.86) for two people, which is crazy.” She emphasized, “While this is the most expensive McDonald’s, it’s actually one of the most affordable places to eat in Zermatt.”

World’s Largest McDonald’s Nearby

Meanwhile, the planet’s biggest McDonald’s operates just outside Disneyland Paris in Disney Village. This 2,000-square-meter ultramodern site, built for over €20 million, spans three floors with 600 seats, including 200 outdoors. Features include 23 self-service kiosks, a panoramic glass elevator, an elegant McCafe, QR code table ordering, table service, made-to-order food, and staff fluent in 16 languages. A highlight is the three-story indoor play area with tunnels and slides, designed to enhance the Disney magic for families.
