Hercule Poirot’s Iconic Detective Returns in New BBC Series
Agatha Christie’s legendary detective Hercule Poirot is set for a new chapter, with a fresh BBC series bringing the Belgian sleuth back to television. Stepping into the famed role is actor Edward Bluemel, who at 33, will be the youngest performer to ever embody Poirot. This marks a significant revival for the character, who was last seen on ITV thirteen years ago with David Suchet in the iconic role.
A Young Detective’s London Beginnings
The new six-part series, titled Hercule, will delve into the early career of the consulting detective. Viewers will witness Poirot establishing himself in London, forming early friendships with characters like Captain Hastings and encountering Inspector Japp as he tackles his first cases. The series is slated to adapt three existing Christie stories, offering a fresh perspective on the beloved mysteries. Reports indicate Bluemel will be sporting a distinguished moustache for the part.
Producers have promised the drama will offer “an intimate study of Hercule the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars.” Filming is scheduled to commence this summer, with Liverpool serving as the primary filming location, standing in for wartime London.
A Career-Defining Role for Bluemel
This casting represents a significant career milestone for Edward Bluemel, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He has previously appeared in notable productions such as Killing Eve, My Lady Jane, and We Might Regret This. Bluemel expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I feel very lucky to have been trusted with such an iconic character who has been played by so many great actors. I can’t wait to continue Hercule’s legacy.”
A New Generation for a Beloved Character
James Prichard, Agatha Christie’s great-grandson, shared his excitement about introducing Poirot to a new audience. “My father had the privilege of working with David Suchet for nearly 25 years, and I now have the good fortune of being able to share my great grandmother’s brilliant stories with a new generation of viewers,” Prichard commented. He added, “Edward Bluemel is an extremely talented performer and will make a great addition to the long line of actors that have played this celebrated character, aided and abetted by Benji Walters’ thoughtful scripts. I cannot wait to see Edward on screen as Hercule Poirot.”
While David Suchet’s portrayal spanned 70 episodes between 1989 and 2013, and Kenneth Branagh has led recent film adaptations, this new series aims to explore a different facet of the detective’s journey. Other notable adaptations include John Malkovich’s turn as Poirot in the 2018 BBC and Amazon Prime production of The ABC Murders.
A Fresh and Exciting Poirot
Lindsay Salt, BBC drama boss, conveyed her enthusiasm for the project: “Hercule Poirot is one of the greatest and most loved characters of all time, and bringing him back to the BBC is a real privilege.” Salt continued, “From the first moments of Edward’s audition we knew we’d found the perfect actor for Hercule, with a performance that feels both fresh and exciting, yet quintessentially Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. We can’t wait for viewers to meet him.”
The series is a co-production between Mammoth Screen for the BBC and BritBox. Executive producers Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer remarked on the collaboration, stating, “Edward Bluemel and Benji Walters are both extraordinary talents and it is a joy to see them take on this beloved character and make him their own. Hercule is both a love letter to Agatha Christie and a fascinating new perspective on an iconic figure – we hope viewers will find it as arresting as we do.”
